Frequently Asked Questions
The Convention does not prescribe a specific ballast water course or certificate, but training is still mandatory. Regulation B-6 requires officers and crew to be familiar with their duties in the implementation of ballast water management for their ship, and to know the ship's ballast water management plan according to their role.
In practice, this means:
- The ship-specific management plan must cover crew training and familiarization, following IMO's G4 guidelines, including details of how that training is delivered and how the completion of that training is recorded.
- Designated officers must be able to explain and demonstrate how the BWMS works and what to do in an emergency or in challenging water.
- Crew members who are listed as having received the training should be able to respond to questions relating to their roles under the vessel’s Ballast Water Management Plan.
Port state control officers check this. If the crew cannot demonstrate essential procedures, the ship can be subject to a more detailed inspection and, in serious cases, detained.
Since the Convention leaves the format to the company, the training needs to be practical: ship-specific, hands-on, and refreshed when systems or rules change.
